Bifengxia (Gorge)

Overview
Located 16 kilometers northwest of Ya’an City, Sichuan Province. It is composed of two valleys, forming the shape of the letter “V”. also features in its vegetation, gorges, waterfalls and snow, which let it gains the fame of “the Small Jiuzhaigou” and “the Lung of Sichuan”.

Bifengxia, meaning "Green Peak Valley", is named after the lush canyon that runs through the town just south of the Panda Base. The canyon has been developed with a concrete walking trail and is accessible via an elevator from the canyon rim.

It is known as "the lung of Sichuan" and was named one of the first national class AAAA tourist scenic areas as early as in 2001. The site consists of three parts: the Wildlife Park, the Ecological Canyon Scenic Spot and the base of the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda. It was officially opened to tourists on Dec 28, 1999.

What to See
The Ecological Canyon Scenic Spot is composed of two valleys. The left valley is seven km long and the right valley is 2.5 km in length. Viewed from above, the two gorges form a V-shape in the land. The Ecological Canyon is between 30 and 70 meters in width, and has an altitude of 700 to 1,971 m, with the steep sides rising 100 to 200 m in elevation.

Vegetation and waterfalls are distinctive features of the Bifeng Gorge. Luxurious forest covers the gorge; peaks and cliffs diverge or almost meet high in the sky, allowing only a single ray of sunlight to penetrate. The area also boasts diverse waterfall landscapes. The scenery enables visitors to feel at one with nature, relax and be themselves.

The Bifeng Gorge is one of the bases of the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda (CCRCGP). Covering an area of 71.6 hectares, it was built and opened to the public on Dec 28, 2003 as a research institute, a breeding base, and a tourist destination. There are more than 60 pandas bred and kept in the base – China’s largest national park of the giant panda.

The Wildlife Park is the only one in Sichuan and the first ecological wildlife park in China. The planned area of the park is 666.67 hectares. This is composed of two cage-free areas for a van safari and a walking tour, and an exhibition space for observing animal behavior.
