Your driver picks you up at your Chengdu hotel, train station, or the airport, and your guide meets you with a Your Way Holiday sign. The private, air-conditioned car heads northwest about 67 kilometers to Dujiangyan, a roughly 1.5-hour drive, with bags folded into the trunk and room to stop for photos or fresh water when you like. On the way your guide frames what you are about to see: a river project from 256 BC that still works today. You do not queue for entry, since the guide sorts the passes for you.
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built by the Qin engineer Li Bing and his son without a single dam, and it still diverts the Min River onto the Chengdu plain after more than 2,000 years. Your guide walks you across the three working parts: the Fish Mouth Levee that splits the flow into an inner and outer channel, the Flying Sand Reef that spills silt and floodwater, and the Bottle Neck that meters water into the plain. From the Anlan suspension bridge you take in the whole layout at a glance, and your guide explains how the three pieces control flooding and irrigation together.
Lunch is not built into the price on purpose. Your guide takes you to a straightforward local kitchen in Dujiangyan rather than a set-menu tourist stop, helps you order, and explains what arrives on the table. Expect Sichuan classics such as mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, or cured meat with garlic shoots, and tell your guide if you want vegetarian, halal, or less heat. You pay only for what you eat, and the meal stays unhurried because on a private car the pace is yours.
An afternoon drive brings you to Qingcheng Mountain, an old center of Taoism and a UNESCO site listed alongside Dujiangyan. At the foot sits Jianfu Palace, founded in the Tang dynasty and rebuilt over the centuries, with gateways, courtyard halls, and carved pillars that your guide reads for you. The temple marks where the Taoist founder Zhang Daoling is said to have taught. Paths here are stone and stepped, so wear grip-friendly shoes, and your guide sets a walking pace that suits your group.
From Jianfu Palace the way climbs toward Yuecheng Lake, a small spring-fed pond ringed by trees and old pavilions, long a subject for poets who retired on this mountain. Your guide pauses with you at the water to place the lake inside the Taoist history of Qingcheng and points out its cool, spring-green color. The terrace around the lake is level enough for a slow walk and an easy photo stop, and your driver keeps the car at the lower lot so you carry nothing back up the hill.
Aboard the cable car you rise to the front-mountain summit and Shangqing Palace, a Taoist temple whose halls and stone terraces sit right on the ridge. Your guide walks the terraces with you, explains the deities housed inside, and shows where, on a clear day, the mountain drops toward the Chengdu plain. The upper courtyard has steep steps and uneven flagstones, so take the railings your guide points out. Allow time to look back over the tree line; this is the high point of the day and the view is the reward.
Below Shangqing, Laojun Pavilion sits at a lookout tied to Laozi, the sage credited with founding Taoist thought. Your guide helps you find the open side of the platform where the forested ridges of Qingcheng spread out, and can tell you which peak is which before you head down. The platform is reached by stone stairs and can be busy at weekends, so with a private guide you move at your own speed rather than a group schedule.
Late in the afternoon you ride the cable car down, meet your driver at the lower lot, and drive back to Chengdu in about 1.5 hours. Your guide drops you at your hotel, the train station, or the airport, whichever you booked, and the car stays yours the whole way. Most groups are back in the city between 6 and 7 in the evening. If you would rather stop for dinner or give less time to the mountain, say so that morning and the schedule adjusts to you.
Most groups give it a full day, roughly 8 to 9 hours door to door from Chengdu, including about 1.5 hours each way in the car. Because the tour is private, you can lean longer at the mountain or head back earlier.

Mount qingcheng was a spiritual experience. The taoist temples nestled in the green peaks were serene and our guide explained the philosophy behind the architecture. Dujiangyan irrigation system was engineering genius from 2000 years ago. She made the history accessible and interesting. The hike was moderate and she adjusted the pace for our fitness level. Lunch was local mountain vegetables - very fresh.

Problem with these tours is that sometimes i feel like you pay for something you could easily find out on your own. Wasnt the case this time, the amount of places you will be taken as well as their knowledge on places that are not even easy to find in google is impressive. I recommand this tour to someone tired of busy life in city area, its much more than the culture and history, but for a soul who wanna get a temperary quite
I spend 6 days in Chengdu with my friends. besides city tour we kinda wanna see natural view, this dujiangyan and qingcheng mount tour definitely the best one near Chengdu for the montains and rivers view, its not very far from chengdu though:). next time we wanna go to western Sichuan to see the higher montains!
We've spent a wonder weekend in Chengdu and Dujiangyan. Love the culture and food here, especially Dujiangyan, very good place to relax from busy life.
Our guide, Andy, was just incredible. His English skills are excellent, and his knowledge of the areas we visited was outstanding. Climbing the mountain to see the birthplace of Daoism was truly an experience of a lifetime. We took a short boat ride across a cute little lake, followed by a cable car ride and then a walk. We were so lucky with the weather, and when we got to the top, the view was amazing. There was a sense of peace and natural beauty just by being on the mountain. I can't recommend Andy highly enough!
