It is possible to visit the reserve and return to Chengdu in one day with careful planning: take the earliest high-speed train in the morning, head straight to the scenic area to see the monkeys (most active in the morning), and then take a late train back to Chengdu in the evening.
This will be a tight itinerary, so starting early is key.
