Upon arrival at the Bifengxia Scenic spot,you will be first taken to the Bifengxia Panda Base, for the safety and development of the captive population of giant pandas, China’s State Forestry Bureau planned and built the panda center in Bifengxia Valley in Yaan on December 28th in 2003. Being the “paradise” for about over 40 giant pandas of different ages, Bifengxia Center performs extraordinarily for the breeding, rescue, research, scientific education of giant pandas to save this rare and endangered animal species, together with Dujiangyan Panda Ark and Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base, and is reputed as the “World Natural Heritage - Giant Panda’s Habitat in Sichuan”.
After a simple yet tasty Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, your guide will lead you on a refreshing hike through the stunning Bifengxia Gorge. Surrounded by lush greenery, this scenic canyon features waterfalls, winding trails, ancient stone bridges, and fascinating rock formations. Along the way, you may also encounter wildlife native to the region, adding a touch of natural wonder to the experience. Bifengxia is made up of two canyons—one stretching 7 kilometers and the other 6—flanked by steep walls rising up to 200 meters high. In the afternoon, take a 1.5-hour drive to Shangli Ancient Town, a charming riverside village steeped in history. Once a key gateway to the Southern Silk Road, Shangli is fondly regarded by locals as a “cornucopia” thanks to its position at the confluence of two rivers. The town is embraced by green hills and flowing waters, with wooden stilt houses dotting the landscape and cobbled paths weaving between gardens and old courtyards. Whether you choose to sip tea by the riverside, sketch the arched stone bridge, or simply take in the peaceful atmosphere, Shangli offers a gentle, nostalgic retreat into traditional Sichuan life.
After breakfast, your private guide will meet you at your hotel and take you on a scenic two-hour drive down the expressway to Leshan, home of the world-famous Leshan Giant Buddha. Along the way, your guide will share stories about the region and the history behind this colossal statue. As you approach the site, you’ll spot the outline of the so-called “Sleeping Buddha” carved into the surrounding hills—a natural formation that locals say proves the saying, “The mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is a mountain.”
Once at the site, get ready to explore! You'll follow a winding path up the mountain, gradually approaching the massive statue. Standing at 71 meters tall, the Leshan Giant Buddha is truly a breathtaking sight. You'll start at the head, which is wide enough to seat a dozen people, then make your way down a narrow, zigzagging staircase carved into the cliffside, passing the Buddha’s shoulders, knees, and eventually reaching his enormous feet—each toe taller than you! From different viewpoints, you’ll also get amazing views of the three rivers—Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi—that meet just in front of the Buddha.
After walking around the statue, hop on a relaxing Boat Cruise along the Dadu River. This gives you a completely different perspective of the Giant Buddha—watch as it slowly comes into view from the water, framed by cliffs and forested hills. It's a great way to appreciate the scale and serenity of the whole site. After the cruise, your guide and driver will take you back to Chengdu, dropping you off at your hotel, train station, or airport, depending on your travel plans.
