Your guide meets you at your Chengdu hotel, or at the station or airport on arrival, holding a Your Way Holiday sign, and your private car drives you to the hotel. Bags ride with you and bottled water is in the car. The rest of the day is free, so you can rest, walk near the hotel, or eat a first bowl of Sichuan noodles at your own pace. Over the next six days your guide explains the history behind each site as you travel from Chengdu to Xi’an by high-speed train.
The first stop is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a large facility on the city edge where pandas are bred, studied, and prepared for life in protected forest. Your guide walks the bamboo paths with you and explains what the keepers feed the bears and how the cubs are raised in the nursery. Red pandas live in the trees on the upper loop, and your guide helps you find them and pause for photos without crowding the viewing rails.
After lunch your guide takes you to Jinli Ancient Street, a rebuilt old town of timber shopfronts, red lanterns, and stone lanes that dates back to the Qin era. It is best for grazing rather than shopping, and your guide points out the stalls for spicy skewers, sweet rice cakes, and Sichuan tofu, plus the small stages for face-changing opera and puppet shows. You are free to wander the lanes at your own pace while your driver waits with the car.
The last stop is Wangjiang Pavilion Park, a quiet garden of bamboo and ponds built around the memory of Xue Tao, a Tang Dynasty poet. Your guide walks you to the Wangjiang Tower, from whose upper floor you can look across the rooftops, and tells her story among the bamboo groves and the memorial hall. It is the calmest stop of the day, with benches by the water for a slow end to the afternoon before the car returns you to your hotel.
Today you drive about two hours from Chengdu to Leshan to see the Leshan Giant Buddha, a 71-metre statue carved into a red cliff where the Min, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers meet, and the largest stone Buddha of its kind in the world. Your guide tells how the carving began in 713 AD under the Tang Dynasty and took close to ninety years to finish, then arranges the boat that pulls out onto the river so you can see the whole figure from the water before you walk the cliff stair beside it.
After the Buddha, your driver takes you back to Chengdu, and your guide uses the ride to place what you saw in the wider story of Sichuan, from the river trade this cliff once watched over to the food and old streets of the city. You are dropped at your hotel or another point in Chengdu that suits you, with your bags carried from the car, so the evening is free to rest or to eat somewhere your guide has recommended.
After breakfast your guide walks you to Chengdu station and helps you board the high-speed train toward Xi’an, a scenic ride through the Qinling mountains that takes around three to four hours. Your bags stay with you and the seat is booked in your name. On arrival a Xi’an guide meets you at the exit with a Your Way Holiday sign and drives you to your hotel, then gives a short brief on the city and suggestions for the evening, from a stroll along the old wall to a bowl of rou jia mo, before you rest for the Terracotta Warriors tomorrow.
After breakfast your guide drives you out of the city to the Terracotta Warriors, the buried army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang found by farmers in 1974 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than eight thousand life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots stand in the pits, each face cast differently. Your guide walks the three main pits with you and explains how the army was made and arranged to guard the tomb, then leaves time at the bronze chariot display.
Lunch is followed by the Xi’an City Wall, one of the most complete old fortifications in China. Built in the Ming Dynasty, it runs more than thirteen kilometres around the old city and stands twelve metres high, wide enough to walk or cycle along the top. Your guide meets you at the gate and you can take as much of the rampart as you like; from the walkway you look down on the tiled rooftops inside the wall and the newer city beyond.
Next your guide walks you to the Great Mosque, unusual in that its prayer halls sit inside a Chinese garden of pavilions, courtyards, and stone carving rather than under a dome. Just outside, the Muslim Quarter hums with market stalls and snack vendors, and your guide points out where to try rou jia mo, lamb skewers, and persimmon cakes. The whole area is best explored on foot at your own pace, and your guide stays close to translate.
The day ends at Bell and Drum Tower Square, the crossing in the historic center of Xi’an. The timber Bell Tower and the stone Drum Tower once marked the hours and the city gates, and your guide explains how the towers were moved stone by stone to where they stand now. Climb the Bell Tower if the light is good for a view over the tiled roofs and the traffic circle below, then your driver takes you back to your hotel.
Your last morning begins at the Shaanxi History Museum, one of the richest collections in China, holding hundreds of thousands of objects that trace the region from the Zhou to the Tang dynasties. Your guide leads you to the pieces worth the most time, the Tang tri-colored glazed horses, Han bronze mirrors, and painted tomb murals, and explains what each says about daily life and the court. Entrance is arranged for you, and you can move between the halls at your own pace.
A short drive away stands the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a seven-storey brick tower raised in 652 AD in the Tang Dynasty to hold the Buddhist scriptures the monk Xuanzang carried back from India. Your guide tells the story of the translation work done here and walks the gardens and stone steles of the Da Ci’en Temple around it. If there is time and the queue is short you can climb for a view across the city, then photograph the square and its fountains.
When the museum and pagoda are done, your guide and driver bring you to the Xi’an high-speed railway station or the airport, whichever fits your onward plans, with help carrying bags and time to spare before departure. Along the way your guide can settle any last questions and point you toward your next city. If your flight is late, tell your guide that morning and the car can hold you near the Muslim Quarter for a final bowl of noodles before the drop-off.
