Tickets are pre-arranged and the guide walks with you, translating the keeper boards about the base's breeding and habitat work. Expect 2–2.5 hours inside on paved, flat paths.
After the pandas it is back toward the city for Kuanzhai Alley — three parallel Qing-dynasty lanes restored in 2008 with brick courtyards turned into tea rooms, small boutiques, and cafés. Lunch is on your own at a nearby Sichuan kitchen your guide recommends — dan dan mian, hot-pot for the brave, or a milder bowl if you want to skip the chilli. Vegetarian and halal requests are easy; mention them when you book. The stroll is unhurried, and there is time for a photo of your group on the lane frontage.
Back at Chengdu Shuangliu two to three hours before your next departure — the guide drops you at the correct terminal, T1 for domestic and international on most airlines, T2 for a smaller set. Bags come out of the car, and the guide walks you to check-in before waving off. If you have a longer layover and want to swap Kuanzhai Alley for Jinli or the Sichuan Cuisine Museum instead, tell the guide in the car and the plan shifts on the spot.

Had a 12 hour layover in chengdu and this tour made it worthwhile. Driver picked us up at the airport and we were at the panda base by 9am. Saw the feeding session which was the best part. Our guide knew the keepers and got us close to the nursery. Afternoon at kuanzhai alley for lunch and souvenir shopping before heading back to the airport.
