This private day trip pairs two of the best sights around Dujiangyan, west of Chengdu: the giant panda base and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. Your guide and driver collect you from a Chengdu hotel, train station, or the airport, and you start at the panda base to see giant pandas in shaded, naturalistic enclosures while your guide covers rescue and breeding work. In the afternoon you walk the 256 BC waterworks that Li Bing built without a dam and that still carry the Min River onto the Chengdu plain, from the Fish Mouth levee to the Bottle Neck channel. Entrance fees are handled by your guide, lunch is left open so you can eat where you like, and the car and the pace are yours, so you can lean longer at the pandas or at the engineering site.

Your guide and driver collect you at your Chengdu hotel or the train station, and the guide meets you with a Your Way Holiday sign. The private car runs about an hour west to Dujiangyan, with bottled water in the back and room to pull over for a photo or a rest stop. Bags stay in the trunk and the vehicle is yours all day. On the drive your guide outlines the two stops to come, the panda base first and then the old irrigation works, so you know what to expect before you arrive.

The Dujiangyan Panda Base opened in 2003 across about 92 hectares of shaded, naturalistic ground built to echo the wild habitat of the giant panda. Your guide takes you along the boardwalks to the enclosures where pandas feed, climb, and nap, and explains the base work in breeding, rescue, and health research. You can step through the education halls, which cover how cubs are raised and how released pandas are tracked. Morning is when pandas are most active, so an early arrival with a private guide gives better viewing and fewer crowds than the city base.

Lunch is at a local kitchen near the base rather than a set tourist menu. The house specialty is Dujiangyan-style grilled fish, crisped over charcoal with chili and Sichuan pepper, alongside dishes such as mapo tofu and stir-fried vegetables. Your guide points out what is worth ordering, explains the seasonings, and adjusts for anyone who wants less heat or a vegetarian plate. You pay only for what you eat, so the meal suits your appetite and pace before the afternoon walk.

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System was laid out around 256 BC by the Qin engineer Li Bing and still draws the Min River onto the farmland below the mountains. Your guide walks you through the three linked works: the Fish Mouth levee that splits the flow, the Flying Sand Reef that sheds silt and floodwater, and the Bottle Neck channel that meters water into the plain. Built without a dam, the system ended flooding in the region and made the Chengdu plain fertile, which is why the site is a UNESCO listing. From the bridge above you can see all three parts at once.

In the late afternoon your driver takes you back to Chengdu in about an hour, dropping you at your hotel, the train station, or the airport, whichever you booked. The car stays yours on the return, so you can stop en route for a last look or a coffee. Your guide wraps up the day with any questions on the pandas or the waterworks and helps with tickets or directions you still need. Most groups are back in the city by early evening, leaving the evening free in Chengdu.
Two sights in one private day: the Dujiangyan giant panda base in the morning and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System in the afternoon, with a private car, an English-speaking guide, pickup from a Chengdu hotel, station, or airport, and entrance handled by your guide.
Most groups allow two to three hours at the panda base, when the animals are active, and about two hours at the irrigation system. The split is flexible since the tour is private.
No. Your guide takes you to a local restaurant for Dujiangyan-style grilled fish and Sichuan dishes, and you pay for what you eat. Vegetarian and milder options are easy to arrange.
About 60 kilometers and roughly an hour each way by private car, so the panda base and the irrigation works fit comfortably into a single day.
Yes, that is the aim of this tour. The two sites sit close together near Dujiangyan, and doing them back to back with your own car and guide saves a second travel day.
Private: only your party, your own car and driver, and a guide you can adjust timing with on the day.

Pick-up and drop-off match your schedule — a Chengdu hotel, a train station, or the airport.

Walk the Nine Bends Plank Road, take the river boat, or do both. English-speaking local guide, private air-conditioned car with an experienced driver, Panda Base and Leshan tickets included, hotel, train station, or airport pick-up.

A private car and an English-speaking guide carry you between all of them, with pickup from your hotel, train station, or the airport, and the daily order flexes if you want longer at the panda base or a slower teahouse stop. You see the Fish Mouth levee, Flying Sand Reef, and Bottle Neck channel up close. After lunch you drive to Qingcheng Mountain, a founding site of Taoism, and take the cable car and stone paths past the front-mountain temples. Lunch is left out on purpose so your guide can point you to a local Sichuan kitchen; pace, photo stops, and vegetarian or lighter requests are easy to adjust on a private tour.

Dujiangyan is two world heritage sites in one day. The panda base was intimate and we saw cubs tumbling in the grass. Our guide explained the irrigation system built in 256 BC that still works today - we walked across the fish mouth levee and understood why it matters. She balanced both sites well with time to explore at our own pace. Lunch was at a riverside restaurant with fresh fish.

Thanks Peter. Dujiangyan really is a two-for-one day, so glad the panda cubs and the old irrigation story made the trip out worth it.
